Musée National de la Marine

Museum of France

Looking to get away from it all? The Musée de la Marine is a real call from the sea! Situated in the magnificent citadel of Port-Louis, it presents two original exhibitions: Ocean Treasures, dedicated to underwater exploration, and Sea Rescue, which focuses on the devotion and bravery of these heroes of the sea.

Founded by the Spanish, the citadel of Port-Louis owes its reputation to its ships which sailed to India in the 17th Century. Behind the fortress’s prestigious ramparts, the Musée National de la Marine presents the finest pages in the history of Breton navigation. In displays laid out in two areas, visitors can see “Treasures of the Ocean”, dedicated to underwater archaeology and the sunken remains of the merchant ships that sailed to and from the Indian trading posts. The visit then continues in the wake of the sea rescue services. From the first sail-driven lifeboats to the high seas tug-boats and helicopter rescue teams, this interactive presentation tells of the comradeship and courage of seafarers and uses objects, tools and memories to show how sea rescue has developed. Telling the story of life on board and the everyday trials of navigation, the museum also presents a fine collection of boats and weapons. For a more distant journey, you can continue your visit in the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes, whose collections show the extent of trade with Asia. Before you leave, take a walk on the ramparts for a breath-taking view of the island of Groix and Lorient harbour.
